6/2024......I had an ex-con working at my house, in 2007. He was a professionally trained home builder and very skilled,....he would share his prison stories with me. He'd been in and out of JAILs, and even a prison a few times, and he explained the differences between them. I didn't really ask him to be so candid,....but he was the most colorful character. He explained all the stuff that prisoners do,....like make toilet wine,...create snacks from combining all the crackers and raisins they can smuggle out of the lunch hall. The buying and trading of cigarettes, or even using matches instead of money or poker chips. How to make a mini-fire stick,....dipping a rolled up paper receipt, covered in deodorant wax, lighting it on fire by sticking a paper clip into an electrical outlet. How drugs are smuggled into the jails. ( a lot of using one's anus, to conceal contraband,....by placing items into the cut finger of a rubber glove, and inserting it deep in one's rectum. About who gets a beating, and why. About how there are people to talk to all the times for entertainment,...one's fellow inmates. In a weird way,..he enjoyed being in jail. His crimes: he'd beaten some folks almost to death, he robbed and stolen stuff for years, he was addicted to Crack and other drugs, and had been a dealer, and smuggler. He was 15 years younger than myself, and I was 54, he was 39. And had lived such a hard life, since elementary school,....was sent to reform school, at first. A Lifetime of crime. He could almost never stay out of jail for more than a year or two. He was SO smart,...could fix anything, he played guitar, and sung. He could do plasterwork, hang dry wall, do plumbing and electrical work. He worked hard, too. Not that it matters, I live in Columbus, Ohio, and Mansfield, Ohio where that prison is still standing, is only 65 miles miles North of Columbus. Columbus, was for many years, home to The Ohio Penitentiary, a far worse and older, scary, grim, giant ( many blocks long and wide) prison. It was right near our downtown. It was finally demolished, in the 1990s. I used to drive by it every day, one could see the guard towers, and the guards with their guns at the ready. It was all walled-in, mostly, and very little of it could be seen from street level.

Gregory Gym, like many other old basketball arenas, has been repurposed for volleyball. However, the UT athletic department would like to build a new volleyball arena as they have to rent Gregory form the Division of Recreational Sports. This would now be the old old basketball arena as the Frank Erwin Center has been demolished to make room for a medical center. The new basketball arena is Moody Center, so the proposed volleyball arena has been dubbed a "mini-Moody."

You have done an outstanding job on this video. I have seen several and this is by far one of the absolute best. We have visited all these locations about 3 times now. Allot has changed over the years. I had a few friends wind up spending time in there for some minor unviolent crimes, but they wrapped up several of these minor crimes and the judges determined they needed a lesson and sent them there for a year each. One friend did only 3 months and the other did 6 months. It did reform them for sure. Another family member and I took a short trip up there just after Shawshank was filmed and released. The place was in shambles and allot of vandalizm had gone on. The staff was preparing for an anniversary show of the filiming and trying to raise money for the restoration. Much of the back buildings seen in the movie have been torn down and replaced with a more modern prison. You can no longer see or visit the cemetary also seen in the movie, but years ago before the new sheriff station and new prison was built, we walked those tracks that runs between the prison and the cemetary and explored it a few times. I live about 45 minutes from this prison and am glad to see it has been saved. This prison is over 100 years old and allot of history here. Construction began in 1886 and continued until 1910. It did actually open in 1896. The big Oak tree was struck by lightning several years later and pretty much destroyed. A huge part of it was transported to the entrance of Mansfield prison for display along the driveway into the prison. This prison is about 45 minutes from my house. We were told the day it was scheduled to be torn down completely, they received a call from Hollywood about filming Shawshank Redemption. That saved this prison as the destruction crew were on their way. I have been there a few more times since the renovations have been started and done. It is definitely an amazing place to visit and well worth it!!

In the 1980s I played for a school in northern Michigan. It doesn't get the same basketball reputation as Indiana but with school consolidation in Indiana, the days of schools like Knightstown are long gone. Not so in Michigan, where almost a hundred schools with high school enrollments in the double digits, most public, still exist. And, as late as 1980 I played against schools with facilities like the Hickory gym, with two ten second lines and separate in bound lines since the court went all the way to within a few inches of the legs of front row spectators. After a few years you figured out where all the dead spots were on the floor, spots the home team tried to make you dribble to in order to get an easy steal. That school and awful gym existed into the 21st century, and there are still schools like Hickory in northern Michigan.

@@ComeSeeWithMe lots of these schools really can’t consolidate, kids would spend two hours each day getting to and from school. There is a lot of pure emptiness up there with some people having their nearest “neighbors” five miles away. That’s not farm country, there’s not a lot of agriculture up there. Every year in the Division 4 (enrollment around 200 or less, about 180 schools) tournament there’s at least one school with an enrollment of around 50 making a deep run in the tournament. And if you lose to a bad team up there or make a big mistake on Friday night you still can’t show your face around town for a week!
